Graphic Design vs. Brand Strategy: Which Is Right for Me?

Beginning and/or revamping a business can be stressful. You go through the paper work, the research, and the late nights of trying to find the perfect name. Now that you have all of that what’s next? So you sit and wonder: “Do I need a Graphic Designer or do I need a Brand Strategist?”

First, start off by asking yourself “Do I know what I want my brand to look like?” If the answer is yes, continue to the next question, if the answer is no you need a Brand Strategist.

Next, “Do I know exactly who I want to target and what information (collateral and digital) would meet these needs?” If your answer is yes, go to the next question, if the answer is no you need a Brand Strategist.

Lastly, “With the information you know and researched on your own can you compete in your field or market?” If the answer is yes, congrats! You just need a Graphic Designer. If the answer is no again, you are in need of a Brand Strategist.

If the little exercise above did not help you, let me break it down a bit further. Graphic Designers tell visual stories. We take your ideas, flip and mold them and then create something that can be viewed by the mass. Graphic design does not typically mean creating rainbows; some designs are used to be gritty, pull at the heart (hence those PETA and wildlife designs), or whatever may fit into your needs. As a Graphic Designer we create everything; from logo designs to posters to even custom t-shirts but it is with all your inspiration, ideas and information presented.

A Brand Strategist develops your brand from start to finish. They take your name and sit with you and ask important questions like “Who would you like to target? Who are your current competitors? What are your 6 month goals?” They then take this information to help create your identity. They assist in what your brand will look and feel like. It’s a heavy load but always well worth it especially if this is new to you. I tell my clients all the time, you only have one time to make a first impression so make sure it’s done right!

Hopefully that helped solve the mystery of Graphic Design vs. Brand Strategy!

My Best,
Casey Renae
