How to Plan Your Week as a Creative

The more I design, run my business, am a mom, a author and still a woman in her late 20’s trying to play catch up on her shows; I am learning that it is actually getting harder to “plan” my daily tasks. I have my projects and meetings outlined on a calendar but what about everything else? Such as laying out my new terms and conditions or even creating a new signature for my email?

Just as fast as we think of things to do we also tend to forget about them. But as business owners, the priority for house keeping of our businesses should be just as important! So here are some tricks that I have learned because even though I love my Day Designer, I have not yet sat still enough to use it!

THE POST IT APPROACH:
Grab 5 post it colors (amount based on the amount of days you want to actually “work”) I have come to randomly jot down a task on the post it and just stick it on my desk or wall. Each day should have a dedicated color. Most times when I finally take a step back and look at them, most of my administrative tasks are on Mondays, meetings are on Tuesdays, and very quick and easy tasks are on Fridays… and so on and so forth. This approach tends to work for me because eventually I will get tired of seeing the post it and complete the task in order to throw it away.

GROUPING:
One blog I stumbled across made a very good point. Grouping your tasks makes life much easier! So if I have meetings scheduled on Tuesday than I will use that day just to schedule all meetings. This allows me to focus on that one task and then close it out. It’s never fun to have to revisit something that you know should’ve been completed a long time ago.

TIMING:
One of the joys of entrepreneurship is setting your own schedule. We can wake up, take lunch, and close whenever we chose BUT use with caution. It is best to create a schedule and remember it is okay if it is week to week. Example: Monday 10am-6pm but Tuesday 11am-2pm. Just make sure you stick to it and make sure the tasks you have planned to complete work within those time frames.

So post it, group it and time it but don’t stress it if you don’t complete it. Things happen just move it to the next available slot!

My Best,

Casey Renae
